There's a growing narrative that the recent Coldcard exploit proves self-custody has failed. The bigger picture suggests otherwise. Current estimates indicate roughly 1,100 BTC were compromised, while around 11,000 BTC moved to exchanges shortly after the issue became known. That implies many holders were able to secure their funds before attackers could reach them. The key advantage of self-custody is decentralization. Each wallet exists independently, so an attacker must target them one at a time. Once a vulnerability becomes public, users have an opportunity to transfer their assets and reduce potential losses. A centralized custodian is different. If the same type of vulnerability affected a platform holding millions of dollars in customer funds, the impact could be immediate and widespread, leaving users with little or no chance to respond before the damage is done. No security incident is good news, and every loss matters. But this event also highlights an important principle: distributing control across individual users can improve the resilience of the broader Bitcoin ecosystem by reducing single points of failure. #AMZNMissesButRallies
